The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs.  The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.  The Center for Disease Control states that it is important to get a flu vaccination each year.  The CDC also recommends everyday preventive actions (like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes and frequent handwashing) to help slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu.  Making healthy choices at school and at home can help prevent the flu and spreading flu to others.

We encourage parents and students to take the following everyday preventive actions:

  • Stay home when you are sick to help prevent others from catching the illness and avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Teach children to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when they cough or sneeze and to throw the tissue away after use and wash their hands.  If a tissue is not available, cover the mouth and nose with a sleeve, not a hand.
  • Washing hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing.  If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth.  Germs spread this way.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects.  Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.

Please visit the Center for Disease Control website to learn more about Influenza (Flu).
