The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has declared July UV Safety Month.  The goal is to spread the word about how important it is to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays.  During the summer we think of going to the beach and all the outdoor fun at the pool or simply playing outside but we should all take a moment to educate ourselves on UV safety.  Protecting ourselves and educating our children on the importance of sun safety will help prevent skin damage in the future.  Here are some easy steps to consider to be safe this summer:

  • Wear a clothing to cover your skin from the sun’s rays.
    • Be aware that covering up doesn’t block out all UV rays. If you can see light through a fabric, UV rays can get through, too.
  • Wear a hat for additional shade.
    • A hat with at least a 2- to 3-inch brim all around is ideal because it protects areas that are often exposed such as the ears, eyes, forehead, nose, and scalp.
  • Wear sunglasses with UV protection.
    • UV-blocking sunglasses are important for protecting the delicate skin around the eyes, as well as the eyes themselves.
  • Apply sunscreen to the areas that are exposed.
    • When choosing a sunscreen, be sure to read the label. Sunscreens with values of 30 or higher are recommended.
