The Giving Tree

It is a tradition here at Ben Martin to establish a Giving Tree for those families in need. A tree will be displayed in the lobby area containing tags of items that are wished for and/or needed for students in our school.  If you are able, please consider coming to the school’s lobby to claim a tag.  Purchase the item requested and return it to the school.  You may wrap your gift or just place it in a gift bag.  We will deliver all donated items in time for the holidays. We have been blessed with an excellent response from the community in the past and this is one of our long-standing traditions of supporting those in need in our very own community.  The Giving Tree begins on November 13 and ends December 14, 2018.  We thank you in advance for your thoughtful generosity!

Come do some holiday shopping!

Our PTA is sponsoring their annual Winter Holiday Shoppe in the Media Center from December 4 through December 8, 2018.  This wintertime tradition helps our students shop and buy their own gifts. Cumberland County approved volunteers are more than welcome to come help with this event. Volunteers are needed to help our students shop and wrap their gifts.  Please visit Cumberland County Volunteer Registration to become a volunteer.  This allows you to volunteer for any event at our school.  We also invite you to come by the Winter Holiday Shoppe and do some holiday shopping with your child(ren)!

Photo of a very happy little boy sitting on a parent's lap reading a bookYou are invited to our Accelerated Reader Night on October 25, 2018, from 5:30 – 6:30 pm.  This is a great opportunity to learn your child’s reading level and their AR goal.  Every student should be reading at least 20 minutes a day.  Reading is essential for a child’s success.  As a parent, reading with your child is one of the most important things you can do to prepare them with a foundation for academic excellence.  Students will be encouraged to read and take an AR Test to earn points towards their AR Goal.  The computer lab will be open for AR testing as well.  Reading with young children is an easy way to connect with them and teach them invaluable words and language skills.

The North Carolina Read to Achieve program is a part of the General Assembly’s Excellent Public Schools Act (pages 38-45), which became law in July of 2012, and applies to all North Carolina K-3 students.

The goal of this legislation is for all students to become proficient readers by the end of third grade. Read to Achieve outlines reading requirements for elementary students and describes what schools will be doing to assist children in reaching the proficiency goal.

Cumberland County Schools is providing resources to aid parents in better understanding the facets of the North Carolina Read to Achieve program and how it applies to their child’s education.  Read more about the North Carolina Read to Achieve Program.
